Job Summary
The Clinical Coding Team Lead under the supervision of the Clinical Coding Manager organizes and coordinates clinical coding processes within the Health Information Management Services (HIMS) Department while efficiently and effectively communicating the goals, standards, and needs of the Clinical Coding Section.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensures work is performed within prescribed technical and confidentiality standards
- In coordination with the Clinical Coding Manager implements standard operating procedures and guidelines for the Coding Section
- Provides leadership and guidance to staff when required to address issues or concerns
- Acts as a mentor to Coding Technicians
- Fosters an environment of teamwork and service excellence within the Clinical Coding Section
- Coaches coding staff on coding expectations and meeting goals related to both quality and productivity
- Coordinates Coding Technician’s schedules for adequate coverage
- Ensures that procedures, guidelines, and coding compliance plans are followed within the Clinical Coding Section.
- Reports productivity measures for the coding of patient records
- Acts as a resource for the coding staff to address coding related issues and questions
- Assists the Clinical Coding Manager in the departmental orientation and training of newly hired Coding Technicians
- Coordinates with the staff to ensure that technical and mandatory training/education is completed within mandated timeframes
- Informs the Coding Technicians of internal and external audit results and ensures that performance improvement plans are implemented
- Works closely with the Coding Support Specialist on documentation related issues
- Coordinates with the Training Coordinator on implementation of the Clinical Coding mentorship program
- Coordinates with the Training Coordinator to ensure that technical and mandatory training/education is completed within mandated timeframes
- Participates in the coding of all patient and service types as required by the Clinical Coding Section
- Maintains confidentiality of patient’s protected health information (PHI) in both electronic and paper formats
- Performs other duties as assigned
Desired Skills and Experience
Experience Requirements
- Minimum 5 years coding experience utilizing the ICD-9-CM and CPT coding systems preferred
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and Evaluation & Management (E&M) coding preferred
- Knowledge of Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) preferred
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite of products with proficiency in Excel and Word preferred
- Knowledgeable in health information systems (HIS) and coding and abstracting systems preferred
- Knowledgeable of electronic medical records (EMR) systems and the content of the electronic medical record
- Excellent English language communication skills both verbal and in writing preferred
- Minimum Associates in Science in Health Information Technology or Healthcare Management preferred
- CCS credential preferred
